Long-Term Implications of Menopause: Bone, Hair & Skin Health – Beyond the Hot Flashes

Course series

Women can lose up to 20% of bone density within five to seven years of menopause — years before routine DXA screening even begins. Learn what to catch, and when.

Course Available from $495

What makes us different

Course Highlights

Understand why waiting for DXA screening at 65 can mean missing a decade of preventable bone loss.

Confidently differentiate female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, and frontal fibrosing alopecia.

Evaluate the real evidence behind commonly recommended hair and skin products — separate from the marketing.

Apply an equity-centered lens to screening and care across every patient population.

Course Description

By five to seven years post-menopause, women can lose up to 20% of their bone density — yet DXA screening isn’t recommended until age 65, more than a decade too late. Hair and skin changes tell a similar story: over half of postmenopausal women develop female pattern hair loss, yet it’s rarely discussed in menopause care. Long-Term Implications of Menopause closes both gaps.

You’ll learn the physiology linking estrogen decline to bone loss (osteopenia, osteoporosis, sarcopenia) and to hair and skin changes (female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, frontal fibrosing alopecia) — then apply it clinically: interpreting DXA and FRAX® results, evaluating secondary causes of bone loss, and differentiating hair and skin presentations with evidence-based treatment options.

Learning objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify the long-term effects of estrogen deficiency on bone health, hair, and skin, and recognize patients at increased risk for menopause-related complications.
  2. Apply evidence-based approaches to osteoporosis screening, fracture risk assessment, diagnosis, and treatment using validated clinical tools and current guideline recommendations.
  3. Evaluate menopausal hair and skin changes through comprehensive clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, and appropriate laboratory evaluation to guide management and referral decisions.
  4. Develop individualized management plans that incorporate pharmacologic, nonpharmacologic, preventive, and longitudinal monitoring strategies to improve long-term health outcomes and quality of life for women after menopause.

Overview

Curriculum

Frequently asked questions

Any clinician managing midlife patients, especially those fielding questions about bone density, hair thinning, or skin changes that patients often assume are unrelated to menopause.

No. Although we recommend completing the programs in sequence, from Foundations of Menopause to Treatment of Menopause and finally Long-Term Implications of Menopause, we recognize that every learner comes to menopause care with a different level of experience and knowledge base.

If you already have a strong background in menopause care and want to focus on the implications of menopause for long-term health, including areas such as bone, hair, and skin health, you can jump directly into this course.

This enduring educational activity consists of self-paced online modules designed to provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based education on the long-term health implications of menopause, with a focus on bone health and menopausal hair and skin changes. Learners will progress through a structured curriculum that combines didactic instruction, interactive knowledge assessments, detailed PDF written material & tables, and clinical case-based learning to strengthen competence in recognizing, evaluating, and managing these common but often underdiagnosed consequences of estrogen deficiency. Content is delivered through recorded educational modules, interactive learning activities, embedded quizzes, and clinical case scenarios. The self-paced format enables learners to complete the curriculum at their convenience while reinforcing knowledge through module-based assessments and clinical application exercises. To claim credit, participants must complete all required educational modules, complete the associated assessments, and submit the post-activity evaluation. Throughout the activity, learners will strengthen their ability to identify patients at risk for long-term complications of menopause, implement timely evidence-based interventions, and provide comprehensive, patient-centered care that promotes healthy aging and improved quality of life.

Approximately 1.3 million women enter menopause each year in the United States, yet many clinicians receive limited formal education on the long-term consequences of estrogen deficiency beyond the management of vasomotor symptoms. Although osteoporosis remains a leading cause of morbidity among postmenopausal women, opportunities for early risk assessment, preventive counseling, and timely intervention are frequently missed. Similarly, menopausal hair and skin changes are often dismissed as normal aging rather than recognized as clinically significant manifestations of hormonal change that can substantially affect quality of life and may benefit from evaluation and treatment. Observable practice gaps include inconsistent osteoporosis risk assessment, underutilization of validated screening tools such as DXA and FRAX, delayed initiation of preventive and therapeutic interventions, limited familiarity with current pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management strategies, and inadequate evaluation of hair and skin complaints through appropriate history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, and laboratory assessment. These gaps may delay diagnosis, increase fracture risk, and leave patients without appropriate counseling or treatment for symptoms that affect physical and psychosocial well-being.

This activity is suitable for Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, and other licensed healthcare professionals. It is particularly relevant for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, pharmacists, and other licensed clinicians practicing in primary care, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, endocrinology, women’s health, dermatology, and related specialties who provide care for women during and after the menopause transition.
