Menopausal Hair Loss: Recognition, Workup, and Evidence-Based Management

Course series

A dermatologist-led guide to distinguishing the most common causes of menopausal hair loss, completing a targeted workup, and choosing evidence-based treatments.

Course Available from $95

Course Description

Hair loss becomes increasingly common during and after the menopause transition, yet it’s frequently dismissed as a cosmetic concern. In one cohort of postmenopausal women, more than half met criteria for female pattern hair loss, and for many, the psychological toll is substantial. Still, clinicians across disciplines may lack a structured way to tell the most common presentations apart, complete an appropriate workup, or know which treatments the evidence actually supports. This course, taught by dermatologist Corinne Erickson, MD, closes that gap.

You’ll learn the hormonal drivers of hair changes across the menopause continuum and how to distinguish female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, and frontal fibrosing alopecia by clinical presentation, trichoscopy, and biopsy when indicated. The course then covers a targeted laboratory workup to identify systemic contributors like thyroid dysfunction and iron deficiency, treatment options graded by level of evidence, and evidence-based counseling, applied through a clinical case and a review of common myths.

Learning objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the hormonal drivers of hair changes across the menopause continuum.
  2. Differentiate female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, and frontal fibrosing alopecia by clinical presentation, trichoscopy, and, when indicated, biopsy.
  3. Apply a targeted laboratory workup to identify systemic conditions contributing to hair loss that require further investigation or rule-out.
  4. Match treatment options to their level of evidence and apply evidence-based approaches to counseling women with menopausal hair loss.

This enduring activity focuses on providing licensed healthcare clinicians with a structured, evidence-based approach to recognizing, evaluating, and managing menopausal hair loss. Learners will examine the hormonal drivers of hair changes across the menopause transition, distinguish female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, and frontal fibrosing alopecia based on clinical presentation, trichoscopy, and biopsy, and recognize systemic conditions that may require further evaluation. The activity is delivered through a self-paced online format combining structured didactic content with an embedded knowledge assessment. Content addresses targeted laboratory workup, differentiation of common causes of hair loss in midlife women, treatment options according to their level of evidence, and evidence-based patient counseling. The activity is designed to help clinicians develop competency in the recognition and management of menopausal hair loss. Participants should complete the educational content and knowledge assessment and consider how the information can be applied to their clinical practice. Successful completion of the knowledge assessment and activity evaluation is required to complete the course and receive the certificate.

Hair loss becomes increasingly common with age, including during and after the menopausal transition, yet it is frequently dismissed as a cosmetic concern. Women experiencing female pattern hair loss may experience substantial psychological distress and reduced self-esteem, highlighting the importance of appropriate clinical recognition and management. A key practice gap is that clinicians across disciplines may lack a structured framework for distinguishing female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, and frontal fibrosing alopecia in midlife women. Clinicians may also be inconsistent in completing an appropriate laboratory workup, identifying systemic conditions requiring evaluation, and determining which treatment options are supported by available evidence.

This activity is suitable for Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Dietitians, Dentists, Athletic Trainers, and other healthcare professionals involved in menopausal hair loss recognition, evaluation, and management.

The activity is particularly relevant to licensed healthcare clinicians caring for women in midlife, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, and physicians, with particular relevance to clinicians in primary care, women’s health, and dermatology.
