It’s Not Just in Your Head – It’s Perimenopause

Course series

A practical framework to recognize perimenopause early, make a clinical diagnosis, and manage symptoms and contraceptive needs with hormonal and non-hormonal options.

Course Available from $95

Course Description

Perimenopause is one of the most common, and commonly overlooked, transitions clinicians encounter. Symptoms such as mood changes, sleep disruption, and hot flashes can begin before menstrual cycles change and are often attributed to stress, aging, or other conditions. As a result, many patients go months or years without symptom relief or counseling on fertility and contraception during this period. This course gives you a practical, history-based framework to recognize perimenopause early and manage it with confidence. You’ll learn to distinguish perimenopause from menopause, recognize the hormonal turbulence behind symptoms across the vasomotor, sexual, cognitive and mood, sleep, genitourinary, menstrual, and metabolic domains, and make a clinical diagnosis. From there, the course covers fertility and contraceptive needs, the benefit-risk profile of hormone therapy (including the timing hypothesis and emerging evidence), and non-hormonal options, then brings it together in a clinical case.

Learning objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Differentiate perimenopause from menopause and recognize common symptoms across vasomotor, sexual, cognitive and mood, sleep, genitourinary, menstrual, and metabolic domains.
  2. Apply a history-based clinical approach to recognizing and diagnosing perimenopause, including consideration of common misconceptions and the role of laboratory testing.
  3. Evaluate fertility and contraceptive needs and the benefit-risk profile of hormone therapy, including the timing hypothesis and emerging evidence, alongside non-hormonal management options.
  4. Apply evidence-based guidance to clinical case scenarios to support appropriate counseling and management of patients experiencing perimenopause.

This activity was planned by, and for, the interprofessional healthcare team.

This enduring activity focuses on helping licensed healthcare clinicians recognize perimenopause earlier and apply a practical, history-based approach to diagnosis and clinical management. Learners will examine the distinction between perimenopause and menopause, recognize symptoms across vasomotor, sexual, cognitive and mood, sleep, genitourinary, menstrual, and metabolic domains, and address common misconceptions about the menopause transition. The activity is delivered through a self-paced online video presentation with clinically focused instruction and an embedded knowledge assessment. Content addresses history-based diagnosis, fertility and contraceptive considerations, the benefit-risk profile of hormone therapy, including the timing hypothesis and emerging evidence, non-hormonal options, and application of evidence-based guidance to clinical case scenarios. Participants should complete the educational presentation and knowledge assessment and consider how the information can be applied in their clinical practice. Successful completion of the knowledge assessment and activity evaluation is required to complete the activity and receive the certificate.

Perimenopause remains under-recognized and is frequently attributed to stress, aging, or other conditions despite the frequency and range of symptoms experienced during the menopause transition. Clinicians need a reliable clinical framework for recognizing perimenopause, particularly when menstrual cycles remain regular, but other symptoms are present. A key practice gap is the inconsistent recognition and diagnosis of perimenopause based on clinical history. Clinicians may incorrectly believe that hormone testing is required to confirm the diagnosis, which can delay appropriate symptom management as well as counseling related to fertility and contraception.

This activity is suitable for Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Dietitians, Dentists, Athletic Trainers, and other healthcare professionals involved in perimenopause management.

The activity is particularly relevant to clinicians who recognize, assess, counsel, or manage women experiencing symptoms associated with the perimenopause transition and who need a practical, history-based framework for clinical recognition and management.
