Not Just a Male Hormone: The Case for Testosterone in Women

Course series

An evidence-based guide to testosterone therapy use in women, from its one supported indication, HSDD in postmenopausal women, to formulation selection, monitoring, and safe prescribing.

Course Available from $95

Course Description

Testosterone has become a wellness buzzword, marketed to women for energy, mood, muscle, and libido despite limited and inconsistent evidence for most of these claims. Patients are increasingly asking for it, yet many clinicians lack a clear framework for evaluating those requests. At the same time, hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in postmenopausal women, the one indication the evidence supports, often goes under-recognized. This course equips you to tell the difference and prescribe appropriately when testosterone is indicated.

You’ll start with the physiology: where testosterone comes from in women and its role as a precursor to estradiol. Then you’ll learn to identify HSDD as the evidence-based indication, compare available formulations and why transdermal dosing is generally preferred, and apply a practical approach to informed consent, baseline and follow-up testing, side effects, safety considerations, and contraindications. A clinical case and a review of common myths put it all into practice.

Learning objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the physiologic sources of testosterone production in women and its role as a precursor to estradiol.
  2. Identify HSDD in postmenopausal women as the evidence-based indication for testosterone therapy and distinguish it from unsupported wellness claims.
  3. Apply appropriate approaches to testosterone formulation selection, testing, monitoring, and recognition of side effects, safety considerations, and contraindications.
  4. Apply evidence-based guidance to clinical cases to support appropriate evaluation, counseling, and management of women considering testosterone therapy.

Yes. A knowledge assessment with a minimum passing score of 80% and a brief activity evaluation are required to earn credit and receive your certificate.

No. This course stands on its own and gives you an evidence-based foundation in testosterone therapy for women, whether you’re just starting to field patient questions about testosterone or already prescribing it.

No. There is currently no FDA-approved testosterone product for women in the United States, so clinical use is off-label. The course covers what that means in practice, including informed consent and setting realistic expectations with patients.

Yes. The course reviews the full range of available formulations, including pellets, injections, and compounded preparations, and explains which are recommended and why. This enduring activity focuses on providing licensed healthcare clinicians with an evidence-based framework for evaluating and, when appropriate, prescribing testosterone therapy in women. Learners will review the physiologic sources and role of testosterone in women, identify the evidence-based indication of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in postmenopausal women, distinguish supported clinical use from unsupported wellness claims, and recognize common misconceptions surrounding testosterone therapy. The activity is delivered through a self-paced online video presentation with a structured didactic component and embedded knowledge assessment. Content addresses available testosterone formulations, the preference for transdermal dosing over oral, pellet, or injectable routes, appropriate testing and monitoring, side effects, safety considerations, contraindications, and application of evidence-based guidance to clinical cases. Participants should complete the educational presentation and knowledge assessment and consider how the information can be applied to their clinical practice. Successful completion of the knowledge assessment and activity evaluation is required to complete the activity and receive the certificate.

Testosterone has become increasingly prominent in wellness discussions and is often marketed for benefits such as energy, mood, muscle, and libido, despite limited and inconsistent evidence for many of these claims. Clinicians need clear, evidence-based guidance to distinguish the supported indication of HSDD in postmenopausal women from broader wellness claims and requests they may encounter in practice. A key practice gap is that many clinicians lack a clear framework for evaluating requests for testosterone therapy. Patients may be exposed to wellness marketing that overstates potential benefits, creating pressure to prescribe testosterone for indications that are not supported by the evidence, while clinicians may also under-recognize HSDD as the evidence-based indication.

This activity is suitable for Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Dietitians, Dentists, Athletic Trainers, and other healthcare professionals involved in patient care.

The activity is particularly relevant to licensed healthcare clinicians caring for women in midlife, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, and physicians who are involved in evaluating, counseling, or managing women considering testosterone therapy.
